ABOUT SAMOA - POPULATION
The population of Samoa is about 186,000; with around 18% living in the capital of Apia, and the remainder living in 362 villages. The majority of the people (92%) are Polynesian, while 7% are Eurnesians and the rest are Chinese, European or of other Pacific descent. The average life expectancy is 65 years.
LANGUAGE & EDUCATION
Samoan is the principal language, but English is widely used, especially in administration and business.
The Department of Education runs state schools and there are various mission schools also. Education is compulsory up to the age of 14. Tertiary education is provided at the National University of Samoa or at the regional University of the South Pacific (USP). USP is based in Suva, Fiji Islands, but has centres in other Pacific island countries. There is also a College of Tropical Agriculture and a Trades' Training College.
RELIGION
As a result of its missionary history, Samoa is a devoutly Christian country. Religious denominations include Anglican, Assemblies of God, Apostolic, Baha'i, Baptist, Latter-Day Saints, Congregational Christian, Protestant, Nazarene, Peace Chapel, Seventh Day Adventist, and Jehovah's Witness.
